Mock 5K & Ultra Marathon Man

Happy Independence Day, USA! I decided to "celebrate" by running a 5K in the vicinity of my home. I got out there at about 9 AM and ran to the neighborhood behind mine. It's uphill all the way there (practically) and once you arrive, the streets are concrete. What a workout! And it was very hot, not that it is necessary to mention that. This is Arkansas, after all!

But I hung in there. I was listening to different episodes of The Final Sprint podcast and thinking about what independence, as it relates to running, means to me. As a runner, I feel that I can do anything (or at least give it a good try -- as my history with water skiing proves -- it's not pretty!). I feel independent of physical limitations! I also feel independent of being tired all the time. Nope; none of that here.

And, I must admit that I thought of Elijah while I was out there. Just when I was starting to self-whine about the heat and the hills, I thought to myself "Suck it up. Elijah is getting chemo today. These hills and heat are nothing compared to that."

So I finished it! And I came home, got ready, and went out and bought "Ultra Marathon Man, Confessions of an All-Night Runner" by Dean Karnazes. I have been wanting to read it for a while. Maybe when I finish it I could pass it along to one of you. Maybe we could start a running-book exchange. That sounds like fun!

Nice run, especially up the hill and in the heat!

I'm sure you'll enjoy the new book. Chris loaned me hers a while back.
