LRM Training Run #3, A Perfect Morning

LRM Miles Trained To Date: 12

Thank heavens for daylight savings! When I headed out at about 5:45 AM, I could almost fully see my Garmin. It was 56 degrees out there. Like a fool, I wore a cotton shirt. I have now re-learned that lesson. I feel like a sweatball now. Nonetheless, it was such a pleasant run. Soon after beginning, the sun was fully up. I opted to go in the "busy" direction, aka the hilly direction. As an out-and-back, the out portion is almost entirely uphill (a gradual change in grade - no killer hills). So, coming home was a breeze. I finished in 35:00:20. Mile 1 - 11:41, Mile 2 - 11:43, Mile 3 - 11:31. Not bad!

Got to love that weather - 55 degrees is perfect for running. Nice easy pace as well! I don't remember - do you take walking breaks when you run, or just run slowly the entire way?

I have to hand it to you, training through the winter for a spring marathon has got to be tough where you have a real winter. For us Floridians, training from now on out is easy (we get that 55 deg stuff too now).

I have experimented with and without walking breaks and found in the end I am faster when I take the breaks! If you read Galloway he also claims that you give your legs a break - a short recovery - by taking the breaks, and therefore last longer. On my shorter runs, like today's 4 miles, I take a 30 sec - 1 min break once a mile. On my longer runs I take a break more often (about every 7-9 min). During a race, some folks just walk through the water stops and run the rest.

I am not sure I could run an entire marathon! I am interested to know if anyone else has had similar results with run-walk approaches.

As always, what is best for you is what works best for you! :-)
