Seeking A Professional Opinion

While strategizing with Coach Terry today about my ankle, I went ahead and made an appointment at the Arkansas Foot & Ankle Clinic. I have been treated there previously; in 2005 I was fitted for orthotics by Dr. B there. My appointment is for tomorrow afternoon with Dr. C. At the very least we'll rule out some bad things (I hope). Even if I find out that I just need more rest, at least I'll know for sure and will no longer second-guess when I should get back out there. Past experience tells me to LET IT HEAL. But current stubbornness forces me to take a do or die approach to getting to Memphis!!!

And so began the pity party. But that brought some better thoughts: if I can't run for, say, three weeks (just throwing out ideas) perhaps I could swim. I could take this opportunity to become a duathlete! I could hone a new skill while maintaining my current fitness level.

The ankle is still puffy, and it feels better while wrapped. However, once my pity party was complete (and the bandage was removed), the ankle miraculously feels better. Hmm.... psychosomatic?

Hang in there! I think you are taking the right approach with RICE and also by seeing the doctor. You want to be ready for that marathon - so laying off now is the best thing!

Cross training is a good idea as long as it doesn't engage that ankle - the doctor can probably recommend something.

Susan--Rest! Allow your ankle to get better, and also some spring will come back into your legs during the down time. Do some core work. Good luck (how awful to get hurt during marathon training, don't I know!).

I hope your ankle heals well and you can get back to running. You are running for a great cause.

Hey Susan - it happens to all of us sometimes .. you just need to keep your spirit up, your body will follow. Delighted you're going to see someone - cross-training (following his/her advice) will help to keep your conditioning and you know - everyone's right - you will have more spring when you return. Thinking of you...
